Back in 2012, we were very excited to bring you the UK launch of the cult status Soapwalla Deodorant. With the range expanding to offer a baking soda-free natural deodorant, we caught up with founder and chef extraordinaire Rachel Winard. From the Soapwalla headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, Rachel let us in on the effective, natural odour controlling power of cream deodorants. Find out why it works and why we’ve made the switch to natural deodorant.
Your natural deodorant cream has gained cult status in the US. Why do you think it appeals to people?
I think the original deodorant became so popular because it’s a natural product that actually works. I, like so many others, tried every natural deodorant on the market and just wasn’t satisfied with the way I felt or smelled. Soapwalla deodorant cream utilises all natural ingredients (most of which are food grade!). I think the fact that it works as well as clinical strength options but without harmful chemicals is key to the deodorant’s success.
The Soapwalla Deodorant Cream is a really ingenious mixture of antibacterial essential oils, moisturising butters, and perspiration absorbing ingredients. How does this combination work as a deodorant?
The powders and clays absorb moisture. They don’t stop you from sweating – which is a good thing! Only aluminum can do that. Natural deodorant do keep you feeling drier though. The essential oils are antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal. All these work together to eliminate odour which bacteria and fungus are accountable for. At the end of the day, the essential oils have been working so hard that they’ve neutralised. You are left with absolutely zero scent – not perfume over odour. Not even with the Citrus Deodorant Cream scent – but nada!
What was the inspiration behind adding a no baking soda deodorant to the range?
I worked for five years on this formula until I knew I’d created the perfect ultra sensitive skin deodorant that will keep you feeling fresh all day long. No irritation, no odour, no BS! And with the same smooth texture and easy application as the original you know and love.
Do you have any tips for using natural deoderant?
Less is always more. Because my product doesn’t have any fillers or water, it’s highly concentrated. A little goes a long way. Swipe a little onto a fingertip and gently apply to the entire armpit. Allow your natural deodorant to absorb completely. Then go about your day stink-free!
One important point: Because I don’t use waxes or fillers, Soapwalla deodorant cream will change with the weather. If you’re having a hot spell or if you’d like to extend the shelf life of your deodorant cream, feel free to store in the fridge.
We have many customers with Lupus. As someone living with Lupus, why is it important for you to incorporate and use natural products in your daily routine?
Lupus is an autoimmune illness in which the body attacks itself, causing a host of problems ranging from skin rashes to kidney failure. While lupus presents itself differently in each patient, there is an almost universal experience of highly sensitive skin. Our skin is the body’s largest organ. It’s crucial that those of us with compromised immune systems relieve any additional burden by using products with natural ingredients. As opposed to harmful chemicals that force the body to work harder to synthesise or remove them.
If people are just starting to swap to natural and organic products, which product do you think should be the first to go?
I’m obviously biased and want to say the Soapwalla deodorant cream ☺ But really, it’s anything that goes over a huge portion of your body. Your skin is an organ that breathes and ingests. The more you bombard it with ingredients and elements it cannot adequately process, the more harm is being done. So I’d actually suggest switching out your body moisturiser and face cream first. They cover virtually your entire body. It’s a way to make a big change health-wise without breaking the bank.
