If you’re anything like us and like being up on the latest beauty trends, you’ve probably noticed apple cider vinegar is popping up in some mainstream and natural beauty products. But natural beauty fans have been using this for hair, skin and wellbeing for years! Apple cider vinegar isn’t just a handy pantry ingredient, it can also be an effective natural beauty booster kept in your bathroom cabinet.

From helping your hair transition from non-natural to natural haircare, to cleansing & toning skin or naturally freshening breath, here are six possibly unexpected but highly effective uses of apple cider vinegar (ACV) for natural beauty – read more about why the mainstream industry are catching on:

Apple Cider Vinegar Haircare

Some perseverance is required when going natural with your haircare and for some, finding ‘the one’ that works for your hair can take some time. One trick is to add an apple cider vinegar rinse when switching to natural haircare. It balances the hair’s pH levels and is gently cleansing to remove build-up of silicones.

ACV can also work as a natural detangler so may replace conditioner. Dilute with water (3:1 helps with the smell!) and use as a detangling rinse or spray – just be sure to rinse well!

Apple Cider Vinegar Skincare

As a skin toner, apple cider vinegar has a great pH for balancing the skin, but don’t forget to dilute it – try a 3:1 vinegar to water ratio.

ACV can also work as an effective oil-balancing, antibacterial cleanser to help rid your skin of acne-causing bacteria. Try our at-home recipe:

  • 1⁄2 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 11⁄2 tablespoons manuka honey
  • 1⁄2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 5 – 10 drops tea tree oil

Combine the ingredients and patch test. Use as you would any cleanser (but avoiding the eyes!). Keep any leftover in the fridge for up to a week. Remember with any product you make at home, you aren’t using any preservatives so the shelf life will be shorter. Play safe and make in small batches, plus ALWAYS patch test first!

Apple Cider Vinegar Mouthwash

Apple cider vinegar has traditionally been used to remove coffee and wine stains from fabric, and you can use it to lessen these stains on your teeth and naturally freshen breath too.

Forget those bright blue mouth rinses that line supermarket shelves. You can make your own mouthwash at home from all natural ingredients, including the optional addition of ACV. Here’s a tried and true recipe of ours:

  • 250ml spring water
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 5 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 5 drops propolis extract
  • 5 drops myrrh resin (often used in natural toothpastes)
  • Optional dash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice

Apple Cider Vinegar Pre-Deodorant

If you are having trouble switching to a natural deodorant and come out in inflammation or rash form the baking soda, try an apple cider vinegar wash on your armpits before applying natural deodorant. Not only will this help alleviate inflammation, but the acid content of apple cider vinegar will also help to neutralise any odour.

Apple Cider Vinegar Make-Up Brush Cleaner

The antibacterial properties of the acid found in ACV aren’t just effective in topical skincare, they can also help cleanse your application tools to keep bacteria at bay. Combine a tablespoon of ACV with warm water and an optional squeeze of lemon for a fresher scent, then swirl your make-up brushes through for a decent cleanse.

Apple Cider Vinegar to Drink

Drinking apple cider vinegar can boost your natural beauty from the inside out. Being a fermented food, it has plenty of gut-friendly bacteria to help with digestion and immunity. As with topical use, when apple cider vinegar is ingested, it may help boost the condition of your hair, skin and even nails.
