Come summer, many chase a more bronzed complexion. However, not all of us are willing and/or able to bake in the sun to achieve that holiday glow. Luckily, there are some great organic beauty options to achieve a natural fake tan for those who prefer a bit of ‘sunless tanning’. Whatever the season, here’s our guide to the best natural fake tan products and our application tips.

Eco by Sonya: Free from synthetic fragrances, artificial orange dyes, parabens and GMOs, Eco by Sonya was the first organic natural fake tan to be certified by the Organic Food Chain. Their classic self tanner is the Cacao Firming Mousse which is lightweight enough to use on the body and face but delivers a deep bronze tan with just one application. Prefer lotions to mousse? Check out their award-winning Invisible Tan. If you’re looking to gradually build up your summer glow on your face, neck & décolletage, go for their Face Tan Water, which goes so far as to brighten and even your skin tone. That means less need for foundation and make-up — a godsend when the weather gets particularly sticky.
Prtty Peaushun: This hydrating lotion made from 100% natural and vegan ingredients instantly gives skin a gorgeous glow. Think of it as a non-shimmery tinted moisturiser for body and face. It comes in different shades: Medium – a true gold, Dark – a healthy bronze and Deep Dark – a cocoa bronze. You can opt to match your skin tone or deepen it. Encased in a super environmentally-friendly lightweight pouch, Prtty Peaushun comes in two sizes (hello travel size!) and takes up minimal space in your kit. As this is not a self tanner and does not contain dyes, this means these lotions wash off in the shower and do not streak!
TanOrganic’s Self-Tanning Oil: If you enjoy the application of oils, go for for this natural fake tan product with effects that last for days and fades naturally. Its quick-drying formula and clear colour means no risk of transferring to your sheets or clothes. It adds a natural bronzed effect to the skin and is lighter than the TanOrganic Self-Tan Lotion but darker than a gradual tanner. Pick up their double-sided application mitt and fake tan erase glove for best results.
Green People Self Tan Lotion: If you prefer a longer lasting tan sans the harmful sun exposure, try this certified-organic formulation which combines DHA (derived from sugar) with organic rosehip oil – a great sun damage protector. For best results, use after exfoliating. Apply it in circular motions, taking particular care at elbows, ankles and knees. Wait for 3 or 4 hours to see the colour develop. Re-apply it every 3 to 5 days to maintain the colour. Aside from donning you a gorgeous healthy glow, it will leave your skin feeling super soft and smelling amazing – not something we can often say about self tanners!

Choose an organic scrub | We’re currently loving Nathalie Bond Organics Lemongrass Body Scrub and the Isla Apothecary Blood Orange + Vanilla Sugar Scrub to energise, revive and tone the skin.
Exfoliate | Before sun exposure, exfoliate your entire body to ensure an even tan and uniform complexion. This is the best prep work you can do for an even natural fake tan.
Keep things circular | After you’ve exfoliated, carefully apply the natural self tan. Apply using circular movements, taking particular care at the elbows, ankles and knees.
TOP TIP | Studies have shown that increasing antioxidant compound beta-carotene 10 weeks prior to sun exposure can help form a natural protection of approximately SPF41. For a list of the most potent beta-carotene foods to stock up on, click here.
